I've added a text field to Activities called "Activity Type" and update it using a workflow rule whenever a task is created or edited and standard field Type is not empty. This is per Salesforce suggestion so that I can use Activity Type in reports.

 

All works well EXCEPT for certain emails. It's with a client and I can't really test but I believe it could be emails coming in from Salesforce for Outlook. They have a type of Email but I don't think my custom field is being updated. 

 

Really hoping I don't have to go the trigger route. Any advice on how I can fix this?

    First,You can test it by creating the Activity/task manually and check if the Activity type gets updated or not.

     

    Also check if the Datatype is as of the Activity Type.
