Is there a way to prevent a converted lead from creating an account? I would much rather have the lead create just an opportunity...and then have a Closed Won Opportunity create the Account.

You could make the "prospect" record type the default or you could do something nifty with a custom field that passes to Accounts via Lead Mapping and triggers a Field Update WFR that changes record type automatically. The latter may work better in case they want a different standard record type for the object.
