Historically (before today), when I use the sidebar search I would get results for contacts, leads and accounts. Now only the accounts show up.
so, what happened to that functionality? I did not change those settings and have no idea why that happened.

What does the Search dropdown field say? "Accounts"? You need to change it back to "Search All". This field is "sticky" meaning it stays at whatever you set it to until you change it. So whether you accidentally or intentionally changed it to "Accounts", it stays set to that until you change it again.
