Account Status Historically

I am trying to report on attrition data for our accounts.  The only way I have figured out how to do this is by running several different reports: added # of users, lost # of users, and # of active accounts - each per month over a period of time.  Problem is, I'm running into a wall when I try to find the number of users on active accounts historically. 

 

For example: If I want to see the number of active accounts for April of 2011, what type of report do I run? We have account types=customer for any active accounts, however getting historical information is proving difficult with this designation.

    Which edition of SFDC are you using, and how are you defining an Account as "Active" vs. "Inactive"?
