Salesforce Workflow Email Analytics Capture/Tracking

Is there a way to track Salesforce workflow email analytics? Example, we want to create a WELCOME EMAIL using the Salesforce email templates (in HTML) so that these trigger anytime new website registrants generate contact records in our Salesforce. We have an outside company that wants to generate/send these emails externally vs using Salesforce workflow. We are advising against this however, the reason they want to do it externally is because they are saying there is no way to track opens, clicks etc. 

 

Since these are CRITERIA-BASED emails that will fire off sporatically vs mass emails...curious to see if anyone else has insight on best practices but also if it's possible for them to get the analytics they are needing if we use the HTML email templates in Salesforce. Thoughts?

    HTML based email tracking is NOT available as a standard feature within Salesforce. You have to rely on external marketing tools and get them integrated to your Salesforce Org.
