Can you explain when should we use a Dependent lookup or a Required lookup filter?

A dependent lookup is a relationship field with a lookup filter that references fields on the source object. For example, you can configure the case Contact field to only show contacts associated with the account selected in the case Account Name field. You then have the choice whether or not that filter is required, or not. In most cases, it's required. But there may be some cases in which, for whatever reason, you still want to allow users to lookup a record that is outside the filter criteria.
