2017 is a few weeks away. Salesforce still doesnt offer a real excel (xls) file export option.
Office isnt going away anytime soon. Can we please focus on this rather basic need?
I'm tired of dealing w csv utf-8 mumbo jumbo for our mailing team. Large file exports from salesforce are much more complex than they should be. They should just require clicking the export button.
The shiny is always bright, but when people have to spend hours / days just working on getting a proper file export, dealing w/ borked special characters or bad line breaks, priorities need realignment.

I saw a comment from the Salesforce Product Manager on the first Idea link you shared:
All, an update from the Product Owner: "Our current plans are not to change the way we export to Excel, but we are considering adding the ability to send reports in PDF format via subscriptions and/or manual export. PDF would preserve formatting and be ideal for reading/consuming the report, CSV format would remain the better option for anyone that needs to do further manipulation of the data. We don't have a formal timeline for this yet, but will update as we have more information."
