I'm currently working on Http listener with multiple flows defined, where each message flow has a requirement of different set of Response headers, but I cannot be able to add the #vars.outboundHeaders default {} at Http Response coloumn.Even adding in the Configuration xml is being removed automatically. My current mule runtime version is 4.1.4, but I can see this working in 4.2.2 fine. Are there any modifications required

You can try with #vars.outboundHeaders default '' it will work.
In the outbound responseHeaders you can't return objects. It must be String
