Hey everyone,

 

i have a question regarding a bar chart with Quarterly/ Half Year Data.

 

My data consists of a metric that is being measured in different intervals, depending on the market

 

For Tier 1 markets, the metric is measured on quarterly basis, for Tier 2 markets on half-year basis and I would like to build a chart that adopts depending on the market and period that is chosen by parameters.

 

The final chart should look something like this:

Last 5 Periods within bar chart (depending on data type)

 

In the left chart, you see the data of the quarter that was chosen with the parameter, as well as the last 4 quarters before the chosen one.

This should also adapt, so if I choose Q1 2018, the chart should display Q1 2017 to Q1 2018

In the right chart, you can see the chosen year, as well as the last 4 years.

 

I would like the chart to adapt depending on the chosen market (f.i. if you choose Germany, which is a Tier 1 market, the chart should show quarters, when I choose Belgium, is should show half-year data).

 

Please note: The Parameter for the timeframe consists of two independent parameters, one to select the period and one to select the year. I chose this view because of the better clearness for the user. This means that the period data is actually no real "time"-data.

 

Unfortunately, Tableau doesn't allow the parameter to adapt respectively. Means, when choosing a Tier 1 market the parameter only shows Quarters and for Tier 2 only half-years. Or is there a solution for this?

 

Second note: The Full Year data is not the same as the average over all quarters, as the quarters are rolling averages of previous quarters.

    Given the example data you provided, here's how I would go about addressing your requirements:

     

    1.  First, create your two parameters, as you described:

     

    2. Then, create two indicator fields to determine if the period is selected, and the fiscal year is selected:

     

    3. Then, convert your date information to numbers so that each row can be placed in the appropriate chronological position:

     

    4. Now, create two more indicator calculated fields to determine what periods should be shown on the charts:

     

    5. Now we can create two worksheets, one for each of the views we want to show on our dashboard:

     

    6. Finally, create a dashboard, and place the worksheets on it the way you like:
