For example I need to adjust some calculated metrics in a specific workbook so I just download it and I want to simply edit the formula but I can only "edit copy". On the other hand, in other workbooks I can just "edit" without any problems. I don't see any differences between datasources that have "edit" or "edit copy" option so I am wondering why sometimes I have to "edit copy" and sometimes I can just "edit".
I have seen the trick how to deal with "edit copy" by creating local copy of datasource and republishing it but this solution is not ideal for me because when I do this then sometimes tableau automatically duplicates some parameters and swaps them in calculated fields which is a nightmare to deal with because I have to go through every calculated metric and check if tableau hasn't automatically broken something which happens quite often. Additionally, there are published datasources that have just "edit" option by default so it is possible to somehow get rid of "edit copy" but I can't find any way how to do this.
Every datasource I am working with is published on tableau server
1) Connect to database
2) Create extract
3) Finish stuff I needed to do in a workbook (including creating calcs)
4) Publish extract (replacing local extract with just published server extract)
5) Schedule extract refreshes
5) Publish workboook
6) After some time I want to make changes to calcs in workbook so I download it from the server and I have edit copy everywhere
7*)Or if there already is extract I need on the server I just connect to this extract and then I start doing workbook stuff
So I assume that I am somehow saving calcs in a datasource instead of workbook. How can I make sure that I am saving calcs in a workbook instead? Also, is it possible to easily move calc from datasource to workbook?
Here is how I am creating calcs:
I can see name of the extract next to calc name field, does it mean that I am saving calcs inside extract instead of workbook? How do I force it to save in a workbook instead?
I even have one workbook with multiple datasources where in one of them I can create calculated fields then I can publish workbook to the server and then I can download this workbook and edit just created calculated fields without a problem. On the other hand, if I create a calculated field under any other datasource then I have "edit copy". In both cases I am using the same way to create calcs. (clicking that arrow like on the screenshot above or analysis/create calc fields...) I have tried finding any setting how to save calc fields in the workbook by default but I can't find it, to me it seems like datasource is default
