Hi all, potentially silly question: I inherited an NPSP org in which Contacts have the Account lookup field on their record, but the Primary Affiliation lookup was hidden from the page layout -- so I've only just discovered this field exists. ( #AccidentalAdmin)

We sometimes have instances when an individual works with our organisation on a professional level, but they've also given us donations as a private individual, so they need both a normal Account record and a household record.

In those cases, we've put their household in the Account lookup (so the donation records are attributed correctly), and created secondary affiliation records to also connect their Contact with the Account for the organisation they work for.

If we listed their household as their Account and their employer as their Primary Affiliation, would their donations still be attributed correctly to the Contact and their household, rather than NPSP attributing the donation to their employer?

YES!! What you describe is EXACTLY how NPSP is designed to work.

For correct attribution of donations, it’s all about the Account on the Opportunity. If it’s a Household Account, then the Contact who is the Primary Contact on the Opportunity (and their Household) get hard credit. If the Opportunity Account is an Organization, then the Primary Contact on the the Opportunity can get soft credit. The business will get the hard credit.
