Just want to make sure that it is not possible to have, for the same profile/rectype assignment for an object, a different page layout for Lightning vs Classic.

Use case: I'm sysadmin, building Lightning pages, but my users are still on Classic. When a Contact has a rectype of Student, in Classic they need to see the Record Type field on the Page layout, so they can see that the Contact is a student and not a donor. When I switch them to Lightning, I'll be able to use a rich text component on the Lightning record page, filtered by rectype, to tell them the Contact is a student, in big red letters at the top of the page - so they no longer need to see the Record Type field in the page layout.

To accomplish this I would need 2 page layouts, one for Classic and another for Lightning - and be able to assign the Lightning page layout to the Record Detail component. This does not seem possible - the record detail component uses the one and only page layout assignment grid, used for Classic as well.

Am I missing something, or is that just how it is with page layout assignment?

@James Browne Thx, good ideas. On the button, I'm going with the "transition Classic users from button to Action" - having only one way to do things is less confusing than training on the new way to do them (how to open the Chatter publisher). Godd idea.

I can totally live with an indication of the Record Type showing up twice. But I had no idea a formula field could detect LE vs classic - useful!
