Lead Conversion is Requiring a Task?

When I attempt to convert a lead, I'm required to populate fields in the "Task Information" section of the page layout (e.g. "Type", "Subject", etc.). I don't want to require a task to be created during lead conversion. How can I modify this page layout to remove the mandatory status on these task fields?
