Have been looking for an answer to this with no real clear answer.
I have a Community and I am trying to list all records for example Opportunities or Accounts where the AccountId or ParentId is related to the {!CurrentUser.accountId}
Why is this not something I can do simply? and if it is please do explain.
Surely there are many others who would want/need this?

What you are looking for is sharing sets. But if you want to see opportuniites you need to make sure you have a partner community license type. Also, make sure the users profile has access to the objects.
