I would like to show opportunities in the details section of an associated account. I tried adding an opportunity field to the account page, but this doesn's exisit as far as I noticed. Any help would be welcome,

An Opportunity is a 'related object'. Those have to go in the "Related Lists" section on a page layout. The Account Detail section is reserved for fields that are on your Account object only.
