Here is our current desired use case for saving leads:

If certain Leads statuses are selected, change the owner of the lead, run our GetNextLead class and display the lead.

If other certain Lead statuses are selected, save the lead and jump to the New Event page for that lead.

Currently we are using a trigger to perform the appropriate updates to Leads on update.  Then, from the Lead Detail page, there is a button that the user clicks to get the next lead.  We have no automation to jump to the New Events page.

How would we go about coding the edit page to be smart, perform the updates currently handled by the trigger and jump to the appropriate page?

Thanks!

You don't specify the details of how the trigger, the UI, and the custom button work together, but if you want combine all that functionality into 1 mechanism, you would have to create a custom Visual Force page to use for Editing and the Apex controller behind the page could do almost anything you want it to do.   If you choose to go that route, visit developer.salesforce.com which focuses on programming techniques.
