    The best answer depends on the process followed by your organization, but I'll give you what I understand to be the best practice. 

     

    Assuming your using the standard Recurring Donations package that is part of the Nonprofit Starter Pack (NPSP), you will have a list of the recurring donations under the Contact. Click the Recurring Donation Name, which in turn will display the series of pledges made. For example, if $100 was pledged with quarterly payments, there would be 4 lines of $25 each. Further, let's say the last payment will not be paid. Click on that donation name -- it will be something like "Patricia Johnson donation (4 of 4) 5/17/2011".  Then click "edit" and change the Stage to "Closed Lost" and click save.
