I set up new users and they are chatter users I don't want that

I'm setting up new users and they are set up as chatter users. They need to have access to the accounts, contacts, reports, etc. What do I do?

Chatter is either on or off for the organization. Currently there is no way to turn it off on the profile level. There are several idea you can vote on over in the Idea Exchange for this exact request.
