- Identify the guiding principles of motion and personality attributes in the user interface (UI) design.
Guiding Principles and Personality Attributes
The Salesforce Kinetics System follows three guiding principles of motion and four personality attributes that helps foster trust with users by creating a consistent and unified experience with a UI.
Three Guiding Principles
The three guiding principles of motion are: functional, structural, and expressive.
Motion Is Functional
Motion helps users maintain flow, drawing attention to the screen changes, both small and large, and increasing the perceived speed of the task. For example, a dueling-picklist component—where users move options between two lists on-screen—draws attention to changes, changing the text box’s background color when a user moves an item to the other list.
A user moves an item from one list to another in a dueling-picklist component.
Motion Is Structural
Motion helps users know where they are, orienting them with a consistent spatial model and creating Kinetics continuity across pages and components. For example, when a side panel animates from the right side of a screen and a user uses their cursor to navigate within the panel, interacting with content before exiting the panel.
A user navigates the content of a side panel.
Motion Is Expressive
Motion delights users with surprising details that turn mundane moments into something special and memorable, reminding users that people, not machines, craft experiences. For example, a progress loader fills as a user marks three checkboxes complete and performs a success animation, with the progress ring bursting into a green check mark after the user clicks the third checkbox.
A progress loader performs a success animation.
Four Personality Attributes
Motion that aligns with Salesforce Kinetics System guidelines also has four personality attributes: nimble, sensible, considerate, and charismatic.
Nimble
Motion that responds with swiftness and grace and moves fluidly and effortlessly to get stuff done.
Sensible
Motion that flows modestly and predictably, helping users feel confident about their next steps. For instance, when a user moves their cursor over various icon choices on-screen and a circular shape highlights and enlarges them.
A user moves their cursor over various icons, highlighting and enlarging them.
Considerate
Motion that welcomes people of all visual abilities, pushing for efficiency to enhance the quality of the experience where needed, and humbly bowing out when users would prefer to skip motion altogether. For instance, when a carousel—a component that displays information in a slideshow format—starts and stops movement as a user clicks a play/pause button.
A carousel starts and stops moving as a user clicks a play/pause button.
Charismatic
Motion that knows when to turn up the charm—relishing in the fun moments and turning the mundane into something memorable. For instance, when a user clicks to check items complete on a list and the completed items move to the bottom of the list.
A user clicks to mark list items complete, and they move to the bottom of the list.
