I'm newish to Salesforce and dataloader.io. I want to import new contacts and create accounts where the contact is associated. I also have data associated with the new contacts to import to a custom object. What is the best sequence to do this in dataloader.io?

For NPSP it is always better to used NPSP Data Import to import data in salesforce
Here are some useful article and trailhead links related to it
Thanks
@Connie Pax I'm trying to understand your data model. What object does each row map to that it has a lookup to Contact? How did you configure Advanced Mapping?
@Judi Sohn Some might be and others are new. I tried this in my dev org with two contacts that are new to the environment.
@Connie Pax Are the records for the NAMI Participant field that you're mapping to already Contacts in the system?
I was able to set up my Advanced Mapping to map in all the fields except NAMIWalks Participant. What I want is this field to be Lookup field to find the contact so the NAMIWalks Participation record is connected to a contact. In the real world, each contact would have a different NAMIWalks Participation record for each year in which they participate. I was able to do this by entering records manually, but I have a dataset of 4000+ records spanning 8 years. My first attempt to import resulted in this failure message:
