Hi Ramsy,
you have stated in your original question "object that looks up a custom field a related opportunity" so i have assumed you have a relationship with opportunity object.
if the objects are not related
you wil need an Apex trigger or you could use flows but the important things is way to identify from which opportunity record the custom field value must be taken
