How to update account territory on save (Enterprise Territory Manangment ( Territory Management 2.0 ))

We've put Enterprise Territory Management (TM2.0) into our org. When Accounts are modified by the UI we found we had to check the "Evaluate this account against territory rules on save" on the layouts.

 

This is based on https://help.salesforce.com/articleView?id=000004725&type=1&language=en_US (which refers to the Old territory management model - but seems to be true for TM2.0 )

 

If this is on layouts - does it not work if an Account is update via

 

a) Api

 

b) Apex trigger ?

 

And if not - is there a way to run the rules in a batch process on a regular (e.g. overnight) basis?
