Accounts to Opportinities

WHen you have a Lead and you want to convert it into an "Opprtunity", you much first convert it into an "Account" correct???

 

How do you then convert "Accounts" into "Opportunities?   Ww can not find an easy way to do this.

 

Or...is is best to go stright from "Leads" to 'Opportunities'?  And in that case, what is the purpose of "Accounts"?

    And then all of the demographic information, notes, phone numbers, etc. must be entered again manually. It can not be converted over from the Account page.
