Kathleen does the contact not have an account name because they are not connected to an account, or because they will be connected to an account but you want to establish it?
For example at my organization we use Salesforce for recruiting and receive applications online. Although the contact may be new, we don't neccessarily want to create a new Account if the name of the company they enter is unrecognized as it could be a difference in spelling etc...
So what we do is employ Bryan's Bucket account concept. We have an Account called Individual. We assign contatcs who are not assigned an account for any reason to this account (usually handled by our automations via Form Assembly) and then we go into that account and re-assign the contatcs to the appropriate account creating that account if it does not already exist.
Not sure if your reason for not having an account name is the same as ours, but if so hopefully that information is helpful to you.
