What are the benefits of converting attachments / notes to files? You can still open notes and attachments in lightning so the information is still accessible. Understood files will need to be used once Lightning is being used but unsure if using the converter tool is necessary. Thanks.

Files have some benefits over attachments: upgraded previewer, can be attached to multiple records, higher size limit, etc. See: https://help.salesforce.com/articleView?id=collab_files_differences.htm&type=5
