Prior to me joining my current firm, they had some custom development completed on the Opportunity object to convert it to more of a management tool and have it indicate what stage in the process prospects are in and use that information to determine "Closing %s" for Sales reps. This development includes updating the Opportunity stage automatically based on the event subtype of the associated contact and restricting users from being able to update it. It's pretty simple development, but i'm concerned when we switch to Lightning the Sales Path could cause issues or break it.

In retro-spec, this should've been created as a custom object to allow sales users to leverage the opportunity the tracker it should be, but the previous employee that made this decision wasn't well-versed in best practices as Salesforce wasn't his primary responsibility

No problem - Turn it on in your sandbox, run the readiness check and you can take a look at everything there first, along with all the areas you might be concerned about. I found just getting myself over the fear of the change was the biggest hump in our transition!
