sorry but - what is the exact difference between record type and page layout e.g in one sentence (the major difference or something...)

Also, try it out! Build some record types on an object & I think that will help. Example from class: we built Hardware RT and Software RT for Products. The page layouts show only the fields for HW or SW products. The picklists show only vendors for one or the other.
