#LightningStrikes my favorite thing about Lightning is console apps. I created one for myself and it makes navigation a thousand times easier. You can toggle between objects and record pages so simply it saves tons of time. My best tip is for people missing the functionality of Extended Mail Merge in classic. From Lightning you can click on your avatar to change to classic only instead of clicking switch to classic, right click it and open in a new tab. This way you can keep Lightning and Classic open simultaneously and toggle into classic anytime you need to make a merge document but still enjoy all the features of lightning for everything else. It's gold.
Hi Jan: For now a record opened from an object list view that is in a workspace open as a subtab of that workspace. It's on my backlog to make that more flexible/efficient but no firm release timeframe on that yet (safe harbor).
Here are some workarounds:
Workaround 1: In Spring '19 we're introducing a subtab menu. One of the options is 'Set as Workspace Tab'. If you're working on a record that you think will spawn additional subtabs and you want to stay organized, first make it a workspace.
Workaround 2: With the Chrome extension on, you can right click > Open Link in New Tab. That will result in the record being opened as a workspace from the start.
