Set Up Delivery Estimation in Order Management System

Learning Objectives

After completing this unit, you'll be able to:

  • Describe the steps to create a Delivery Estimation Setup record in Order Management System.
  • Explain how to configure processing time, carrier pickup time, and business hours at the service level and location level.
  • Describe the steps to create a B2C Commerce connection for communication between Order Management System and the Commerce Delivery Service.

Configure Delivery Estimation

In Unit 2, you configured the shipping method and shipping location for the online sporting goods outlet. In this unit, you create the Delivery Estimation Setup record, and connect B2C Commerce to the Order Management Commerce Delivery Service (CDS).

The Delivery Estimation Setup record stores service-level configuration that applies to an entire location or location group. The record is associated with one sales channel. When a B2C Commerce storefront makes an API request to CDS, it includes the sales channel identifier, which CDS uses to retrieve the associated Delivery Estimation Setup record. The record identifies the location group to query, what routing rules to apply, how much processing time to add, and what business hours to use for calculating the estimated delivery date.

Get Hands-on with a Trailhead Playground

If you completed the hands-on practice in Unit 2, your Trailhead Playground should still be open. Use it to follow along with the steps in this unit.

If you didn’t create a playground in Unit 2 and want to follow along and try out the steps, go to the bottom of this page, select the playground name, and then select Create Playground. It typically takes 3–4 minutes for Salesforce to create your Trailhead Playground. You also use the playground for the other hands-on exercises in this badge.

Create a Delivery Estimation Setup Record

In your Trailhead Playground, complete these steps.

  1. In the Order Management app, select the down arrow on the top dropdown list and select Order Fulfillment Setup.
  2. On the Delivery Estimations tab, select New.
  3. In the Basic Information section of the New delivery estimation record, enter these values.
    • From the Associate Channel or Store dropdown, select Sales Channel.
    • Search by name: Online Store US
    • Location Group: 00002
    • Delivery Estimation: Online Store US
    • External Reference: online-store-us-delivery
    • Routing Logic: Standard

Standard: This logic uses Salesforce default order routing logic, which determines an order's route based on inventory availability, distance, and number of splits. This route calculates the delivery estimation.

Static: This logic uses manually entered minimum and maximum transit times.

  1. Processing Time: Processing time represents how long it takes to prepare the order for shipment after the order is placed.
    • Order Processing Time: 2
    • Order Processing Time Unit: Hours
    • Carrier Pickup Time: 11:00 PM
  2. Business Hours: Select an existing Business Hour Option or create one. For this exercise, create new business hours.
    • From the Business Hours Options dropdown, select New Business Hours.
    • Business Hours Name: Online Store US (This is the name assigned to the business hours.)
    • From the Time Zone dropdown, select: (GMT-05:00) Central Daylight Time (America/Chicago)
    • Set your business hours for the sales channel: Sunday–Saturday 12:00 AM to 12:00 AM
    • Save your work.

Service-Level Versus Location-Level Configuration

The Delivery Estimation Setup record defines service-level settings that apply to the entire location group. This approach works well when all your fulfillment locations operate on similar schedules and have similar processing speeds.

However, different locations often have different operating characteristics.

  • A warehouse might process orders in 1 day, while a retail store processes them in 2 hours.
  • A warehouse might operate 7 days a week, while a store operates Monday–Saturday.
  • A warehouse might have a carrier pickup at 5 PM, while a store has pickup at 2 PM.

Location-level overrides handle these differences. When you set a location-level processing time, business hours, or carrier pickup time, that location uses those specific settings instead of inheriting the default service-level settings.

Next

You've completed the OMS Core configuration for the sporting goods outlet. You created a Delivery Estimation Setup record with service-level processing time and business hours, configured locations with time zone and country code, and set up shipping carriers with carrier methods linked to locations.

In Unit 4, you switch to the B2C Commerce side of the setup. You connect B2C Commerce to OMS via the B2C Commerce connection, configure Account Manager authentication, create custom attributes to store delivery estimate data, set site preferences for the CDS connection, create the service credential, and deploy the cartridge so estimates display on the product detail page (PDP).
