Can I change the default donation name in older version of npsp?

I'm running an older version of the NPSP that uses one-to-one account model (probably v.2). I'd like to change the default donation name to Name-CloseDate-Primary Campaign Source. I know how to do that in the current version (through settings) but there is no obvious place to make this change in the older version (no settings tab, no workflow that generates the name, etc.). I'm going to look at apex triggers in case it's done there, but haven't worked with them much yet so a little nervous about mucking things up. I could also create a workflow that updates the Donation Name, but will that work? That is, will the current system override that?
