Deliver Slack with Slack
Learning Objectives
After completing this unit, you’ll be able to:
- Understand how to use Slack for project delivery.
- Identify best practices for delivering Slack with Slack.
Collaborate with Slack
Since this is a Slack launch, it should come as no surprise that the majority of work with the client should be executed in Slack itself. Slack consolidates your project work into one view so that you can enhance collaboration, handle roadblocks more quickly, and reduce unnecessary churn.
Working with your client in Slack reinforces the value that Slack can drive for their organization and models best practices for working in Slack. This starts with setting up a dedicated Slack Connect channel for the project. Slack Connect channels allow you to work with people outside of your company. And this channel becomes the foundation of all communication between you and your client, in place of email or other tools.
Aim to have this channel set up before the kickoff meeting so that the client gets accustomed to working together with you in Slack. Starting project work in email and then moving the client to a Slack Connect channel leads to friction and confusion for clients who are still transitioning to this new way of working.
Key deliverables, questions, and updates are to be shared in this channel for team and stakeholder awareness. Anyone who joins the project can see the full history, which makes onboarding new members even more efficient.
Best Practices for Delivering Slack in Slack
As you create your Slack Connect channel, here are some best practices that help keep the team engaged and informed in the project channel.
Help your team and client find the information they need.
- Set the channel topic and description to share how the channel is intended to be used.
- Pin messages and bookmark links that are often referenced so they're easy to find, like welcome messages or links to your project plan.

Make sure everyone is informed.
-
Create user groups to notify team members and clients of important updates all at once.
- Encourage your teammates and clients to customize their notification settings to stay actively informed on project updates.

Integrate tools and workflows to help move work forward.
-
Maximize your project management tools by connecting them to your project channel which streamlines task management and further integrates your project management.
- Take advantage of tools like Workflow Builder to take your daily meetings and check-ins asynchronously to stay on top of progress and potential blockers.
-
Use workflows to automate activities like onboarding new channel members, fielding access requests, and updating team members on project status directly in Slack.
