Is it possible to have a data extract (TDE) refresh locally and not on tableau server (but be utilized on published workbooks to server)? Want ability for users to view published workbooks on server (that use a TDE), but not have access to the data sources via desktop (due to sensitivity of data).
If you do not allow users view and connect permssions on data sources on server, they cannot render the viz (receive error message).
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Your Tab. Admin. should be able to give you a screen shot of what the permissions are -- that's what I do for my end users when needed. Also, if you are a Project Leader then you would have access to the permission rules for the particular Project and thus be able to much around with the permissions
Maybe the permissions are different at the workbook level? Or the view (a.k.a. sheet) level? Permission precedence is View (highest) > Workbook > Project > Site (lowest). Oh, and individual permissions have greater precedence over Group permissions.
