Hi there.

I'm trying to set up a sender domain for one of my client. 

We are trying to use their original domain. They already have an spf related to this domain. I know that we can't have two spf records related to one domain so I told him to merge the two SPF record by adding the Pardot SPF (include:aspmx.pardot.com) right after their original SPF (I think he added it before their original SPF I don't know if this point relevant or not)

I've already done this for multiple clients before and I never had issues with it. 

 

He told me that by adding the Pardot SPF to his original SPF record a lot of, now their emails are considered  as spams and some mailserver are refusing the emails that they are sending (the emails are not sent by Pardot yet). So he deleted the part with the Pardot SPF.

 

Now I have a few questions: 

  • Has anyone encountered this problem before?
  • Is it possible that the set up of merging the two SPF was not done correctly and that's why they got spams?
  • Is it possible to use another sender domain (that doesn't exist)? how would it work?
  • Is it possible to have a sub-sender domain?

    There can only be one SPF record per domain.  Multiple sending systems need to be set up in a single SPF record as you described, with multiple possible senders I would put the first record that is your general mailserver first, and Pardot second. Possible that there was a stray character the first time around that made it malformed.  Always check your records with a tool like MXtoolbox.com to make sure they are ok.  Also you should have a DKIM Record (separate records) for both your regular mailsever and pardot as well, this is not optional.  See this article https://www.socketlabs.com/blog/best-practices-sender-policy-framework-spf/ for SPF best practices.
