I signup for trailhead few days ago and I have been uploading lots of pictures, yet none is showing up. It either shows a dark or light background.

Thanks Guys! I think it is because I was uploading the profile photo via mobile. I switched to a desktop computer and it worked perfectly.
I think the Image type is the issue. Check the type of the Image and try converting it to JPEG/JPG.
Possibly it might be from your browser or the picture quality. I had same issue in the past, i switched to google chrome, cleared recent cache and improved the quality of my photo, then my profile image displayed.
Trailhead works better on google chrome and firefox browsers.
You can raise a case with salesforce support team for account issues.
