Approval without locking opp

We need to build an approval process running in the background of an opportunity to determin revenue flow from one Business line to another.  The process should not lock the opportunity only two fields one the Business Use case field which the Opp owner completes and sees on the screen the other is a business line switch which is only visible and editable by the approvers.  The process is two tiered 1) review the business use case is correct, upon approval the field should be locked.  2) to review which Business line switch, max. of 3 approval lines dependent on revenue and whether the teams can agree.  I do not want to have the opportunity locked down for using during this process is happening behind the scenes.

 

I have been told the opp is locked during approval process when using approval tool.  Is there a way around this?

    The standard approval process will always lock the record whilst it awaits approval. Another approach might be a workflow...you could have a tick box or stage that the users select when it's ready for the process. When the box/stage is selected a workflow sends a notification to the 'approver/s' and also changes the record type. The record type could have a new page layout where the 2 fields you mention are read only. When the record is 'approved' the approver changes the stage (or something similar) and the record type is changed back via another workflow.
