Can I use Marketing Cloud personalization without using Commerce cloud?

I'm researching Marketing Cloud for my business and I really like the personalization part.  But I keep reading Salesforce has OMNIChannel.  Does that mean I have to use Commerce Cloud for my web site as well if I want to use SFMC-Personalization?  If I don't use Commerce Cloud do I loose any capabilities?
