Migrate from OLD nonprofitforce to NPSP3

I am working with a group that has a very old instance of nonprofit salesforce called nonprofitforce, which predates the NPSP.  I'm trying to find out any caveats before starting the migration.  I have not tried the updater tool and am suspicious it won't work, particularly given the structural differences and the customizations over the years.  Does anyone know of any documentation about making this switch?  Any words of wisdom before I start making changes?  Will I need to export all data and start afresh, moving data into the database via the data loader?  Thanks for any pointers.

    Right, so I think you need to treat it as a greenfield implementation, how are (if) you going to map the data structure you have to the NPSP architecture

    when if you get granted access to the pack you will see it as an app in the launcher
