How would I create an aggregate of the number of records from an object

I have created a custom object for which the Contact object is the Master Detail. What I would like to do is create a field in Contacts that sums up the number of records of the custom object that a given Contact has.

Sounds like you are in need of a Roll-Up Summary field!
