I understand bucket fields have a limit of 20 values, what are some workarounds to bucket field values with this limitation in reports?

Looking for options on how to bucket field values in a report when the field contains more than 20 unique values. An option I thought of is to create a bucket field on the objects and populate with a value based on the unique field value. But curious if there is an option to run a row level formula? Thanks!
