We are trying to set-up an ETL for User Management for updating existing User records.I was hoping to set the employee number as external id field, but looks like it is not possible to set a Standard field as external id.
Anyone face the same challenge and how did you workaround this?

@Priya you are right, you cannot have a standard field as an external id. What you can do is create a custom field and then create a workflow rule that copies the value from the standard field into this field. You can mark this custom field as an external id.
