Create a Field Service Trailhead Playground

Learning Objectives

In this project, you’ll:
  • Create and name a Trailhead playground.
  • Install and set up the Field Service managed package.
  • Create a service territory.
  • Create a service resource and a dispatcher.

Create a Field Service Trailhead Playground

In this project, you enable Field Service, install the managed package in a new Trailhead playground, and set it up. Field Service connects your workforce, products, and customers on one platform to deliver exceptional on-site service. The managed package powers up your field service team with some great new features.

  • Powerful scheduling features enable dispatchers to see appointment lists, scheduling actions, a resource availability chart, and an interactive map in one place in the dispatcher console.
  • A guided setup tool helps admins integrate and maintain scheduling policies, global actions, sharing tools, and optimization rules.

Before you begin this module, we recommend completing the Field Service Basics module. It familiarizes you with the players involved in setting up a field service team and the benefits of Field Service.

Ursa Major Solar Needs an Upgrade

Here’s a quick tale about a company named Ursa Major Solar and its field service woes. Ursa Major sells and installs solar components and turn-key solar systems for residential and commercial properties. The company started out with a few installers and an office manager who managed installer’s tasks along with everything else. Then Ursa Major hired more installers and a dispatcher. But the company is growing fast, and it’s too much for the dispatcher to handle using the current tools. Installers are ending up at the wrong place or they’re arriving at the wrong time. Sometimes, they’re at the right place at the right time but don’t have the tools they need. And customers are getting frustrated.

Ursa Major needs better tools to coordinate its expanding field service team. Field Service and its managed package are just what Ursa Major needs to solve those problems. With it, the dispatcher can manage everything from a single console, where they can create and optimize schedules and resources.

Let’s see how.

Create and Name Your Playground

To get started, create a Trailhead Playground. Use a fresh playground to complete the steps in the project.

  1. Scroll to the bottom of this page and click the name of your current org next to the Launch button.
  2. Click Create Playground and give your playground a name. This process takes a few minutes, and it’s worth the wait.
  3. Back on the project page, click Launch to open your spiffy new playground.

Reset Your Playground Password

Reset your playground password to something you can remember, because you need it to log in when you install the managed package.

  1. Click Setup and select Setup.
  2. Enter users in the Quick Find box, then select Users.
  3. Check the box next to your name. Make note of your username.
  4. Click Reset Password(s) and then OK. This step sends an email to the address associated with your username. If you don’t see the email, check your spam folder.
  5. Click the link in the email.
  6. Enter a new password and confirm it.
  7. Click Change Password.

Now that you’ve named your playground and know your username and password, it’s time for the fun stuff!
