Apply What You Have Learned

Learning Objectives

After completing this unit, you’ll be able to:

  • Identify and compare the types of charts that can be used to compare measures in Tableau.
  • Describe use cases for each chart type.

Review Completed Analysis Work

You and Jamal have done some great analysis work for Coffee Chain while exploring all of these chart types. This table summarizes all of your hard work.

Chart Type

Purpose

Coffee Chain Analysis

Bar Chart

  • Compare and rank numerical data values across categories.
  • Highlight the largest or smallest number in a set of data or to show relationships between values.
  • Which are Coffee Chain’s top-selling products?
  • Which are the lower performers?
  • Which is the highest-selling herbal tea and how much did it make?
  • Which is the lowest-selling herbal tea and how much did it make?

Stacked Bar Chart

  • Compare and rank numerical data values across categories while comparing the parts within each bar to see how different groups contribute to the total value.
  • Are sales for different product types fairly evenly distributed within each market?
  • Which market doesn't have any sales for tea products?

Bar-in-Bar Chart

  • Visualize how two things compare when one has a logical relationship to the other, by layering one bar on top of another.
  • Compare two measures without stacking marks or expanding the axis, in a presentation that's more compact and organized than a side-by-side chart.
  • Which products have already exceeded their budgeted sales?

Bullet Graph

  • Compare the performance of a primary measure to one or more other measures, often against a goal.
  • Evaluate the performance of a metric against a goal, especially when interested in seeing a breakdown of stages toward that goal.
  • Are each of the products that haven't met their targets yet within 75% of meeting their budgeted sales goals?
  • For Colombian coffee in the West market, actual sales are $30,352. What's the budgeted sales target for that product in that market?

Extend Your Knowledge

Extend your understanding by reviewing how to read each chart and see more examples for each chart type, including for healthcare, manufacturing, and nonprofit organizations. Select each chart type to learn more.

Knowledge Check

Ready to review what you've learned? This knowledge check isn’t scored—it’s just an easy way to quiz yourself. To get started, drag the media and communications scenario in the left column next to the closest match for the type of chart on the right. When you finish matching all the items, select Submit to check your work. If you’d like to start over, select Reset.

Summary

What type of business, profession, or industry do you work in? Can you describe how you can use each of these charts with your own data?

In this module, you learned about different types of charts that can be used to compare measures in Tableau. You learned how to present information clearly and compactly in each chart type. You also completed hands-on activities to build a bar chart, stacked bar chart, side-by-side bar chart, bar-in-bar chart, and a bullet graph. Now you're ready to apply these chart types to your own data.
