Hello Tableau Community,

I’m working on compiling a list of the top 10 most useful UI features for building compelling and visually appealing dashboards on Tableau Public. Based on your experience, which UI features do you find most helpful or impactful when designing effective visualizations? I’ll be collecting and utilizing your insights in my work, so I’d really appreciate your thoughts and recommendations!

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi @Vaishnavi Kilambi

    Here's some on my list:

Colour options - effective use of colour is really crucial for a good visualisation. Too many colours or colours that have inconsistent meaning can make it hard for people to engage. I have heard the advice to start with grey scale and then add colour to highlight key points.

Dashboard layout and spacing - setting out your dashboard in a way that lends itself to how people's eyes track, and giving your visualisations room to breath with space in between charts, can make a big difference. Instead of everything crammed together or with inconsistent layout. A tool that allows you control over layout (and/or encourages good practice) can be seen as important.

Ability to add text and captions - guiding users through the key insights can make a big difference to how much insight users get. Colour was one way mentioned above. Captions and text can be another.

Formatting options - being able to remove or emphasis certain chart components (e.g. remove grid lines) can help people to focus on insights.

Interactive elements - filters, filter actions, tooltips (like Peter mentions). These allow users to start to explore, engage and self-serve.

I could go on - images (attention grabbing, can tie in with your story); parameters and set controls (for what if analysis and/or comparisons); map layers (for when you want to draw whatever you want); ... It will be interesting to see what others post and what you come up with!
