Grant by Hierarcy not working

I am using a Sharing Setting to limit access to the data in a custom object to the owner and their manager but the manager cannot see it. I have Grant Access Using Hierarchies ticked

    Manager field on User Record

     

    Nuno the Manager can see the object but not the data
