Custom "Contact Role" Object

Due to the limitations of the native "Contact Roles" object in Salesforce, I am going to be creating a custom object. 

 

Does anyone have any suggestions for best practices for creating a custom object that mirrors the function of contact roles?

    Why do you have a contact role object?

     

    In creating a custom object my personal experience is always make it as clean as possible for data to be inputted (picklists ; many to many relationships)
