We have a custom object with a phone field. The field type is "Phone". I would like this field to automatically be formatted to (xxx) xxx-xxxx, just like it does with the standard objects. However people are able to enter in whatever they want. These are coming in via manual entry, upload, or from our website, so I don't really want to create a validation rule. Is there a way to do this?

You can use Jim's suggestion from the following thread.

You will basically have to create a workflow rule with the criteria and field update formula mentioned by Jim. Once you have activated the rule, the phone number will be appropriately formatted to the correct format everytime a record is created or edited.You can always archive on platform so that you get the significant data storage savings while still having your emails readily available if they are needed.
