I have been exploring Salesforce Files Sync.  I want my users to be able to click on the name of the file, open, make their edits, save and have it update back on the record that it's attached to.  So far I haven't been able to figure out where exactly to "click" to do this.  Clicking the name of the file takes them to the Chatter File "Preview" window and from here it only looks like they then have to download it, make their edits, then upload a new version.  I have figured out how to click, open, edit, save through windows explorer from the regular Salesforce files folder, but that seems a little odd to have to ask them to hunt around in a folder for the file when it's essentially right in front of them on the record.  What am I missing?

Really good information thanks. I'm glad I wasn't just missing it. We are actually transitioning off a separate document management application (ImageNow) and so don't want to go external unless I absolutely have to. That and we tried to connect with our SharePoint server and were unable to do that due to some authentication issues. But if the solution that I'm proposing doesn't work for my users, we'll certainly consider going out to another cloud. Thanks!
