Adjust the Behavior of Promotions

Learning Objectives

After completing this unit, you’ll be able to:

  • Explain the purpose of the Update Scope field.
  • Apply a promotion to a bundle in the cart.
  • Describe the options to delete promotions.
  • Apply multiple promotions to the same bundle.

Explore Update Options

So far, you learned how to create a new promotion and configure the products you want to include. In this unit, you find out more features of Industries CPQ that affect how your promotions and bundles behave in the cart.

Ada used the Back to School Student Offer bundle to create the promotion named Student Internet Promotion. She knows that she can add promotions directly to the cart along with their related bundles. But what if the bundle is already placed in the cart for purchase? Can Ada still apply the promotion to it? She can, thanks to Industries CPQ.

The Update Scope field of the promotion controls how the promotion is applied to a related bundle currently in the cart. This field has two settings.

  1. Update Item Only: Select this option to update only the parent product. No promotional changes are made to child products currently in the cart.
  2. Update Item and Child Items: Select this option to update the parent product and all child products. Promotional changes are made to child products in the cart.

Apply a Promotion to a Cart Bundle

Here’s how Ada applies Student Internet Promotion to the Back to School Offer bundle, which is already placed in the cart for purchase.

  1. In the Vlocity Product Console, click Student Internet Promotion.
  2. Select Promotion Products in the sidebar.
  3. Click Edit to the left of Back to School Student Offer.
  4. In the right-hand panel, under General Properties, select Update Item and Child Items for the Update Scope field.
  5. Click Save.

The General Properties section shows Update Item and Child Items selected for the Update Scope field.

Ada tests the changes she made. She adds a Back to School Student Offer to the cart followed by Student Internet Promotion. She notices that the promotion and its pricing aren’t added as a new offer, but are instead applied to the bundle that was already in the cart. Woohoo! Ada gives herself a pat on the back.

Delete a Promotion

What if Ada wants to delete a promotion? When you add a promotion to the cart, it changes the existing contents of the cart, which is great. But if you then delete the promotion, the original cart contents amended by the promotion are deleted too.

Ada wants to change the settings of Industries CPQ so that when a promotion is deleted, the associated products remain in the cart. Industries CPQ gives you the following options to delete promotions.

  • Deep delete, the default setting, removes the discounts, products, and services associated with a promotion.
  • Shallow delete removes only discounts and cardinality (quantity), not the products associated with the promotions.

There are two options to delete a promotion: deep delete and shallow delete.

The setting to use shallow or deep delete applies business-wide to all orders. To control whether your customer service representatives (CSRs) and salespeople can use deep or shallow delete, update the Setup Value in DeleteServices. Here’s how Ada does this.

  1. Use the App Launcher to locate and select Vlocity CMT Administration.
  2. In the Vlocity CMT Administration page under Custom Settings, click CPQ Configuration Setup.
  3. Search for the DeleteServices setting by typing Delete in the search bar. The DeleteServices setting is set to Yes by default. The default setting is deep delete.
  1. Click Edit to edit the setting for DeleteServices.
  2. Enter No in the Setup Value field for DeleteServices. This allows you to delete multiple promotions individually.
  3. Click Save.

The Setup Value field for DeleteServices set to No.

Apply Multiple Promotions to a Bundle

Industries CPQ allows you to create and apply more than one promotion to the same bundle. When you apply each promotion to the child products in the cart, the promotion adjustments apply automatically. For example, Infiwave bundled the following child products for customers interested in Infiwave Phone 10, a new product that the company launched recently.

Infiwave Phone 10 Intro Bundle

Child Products

Original Price

Infiwave Phone 10

$999.99

Unlimited Talk + Text

$14.99/month

4G LTE Data Plan

$34.99/month

When the phone launched, Ada created a promotion named Infiwave Phone 10 Intro Promo, reducing the phone’s price and data plan by 20%. This promotion was available to new and existing customers for 3 months. Here are the updated prices.

After the launch period ended, Ada created a second promotion for existing customers as part of the company’s loyalty-and-retention program. This new promotion reduced the price of the child product, Unlimited Talk + Text, by 20% for 6 months with the purchase of Infiwave Phone 10 Intro Promo. Because promotions can apply to previously purchased products, customers who have already purchased the bundle can also take advantage of the savings.

Note

To apply promotional pricing to child products of product bundles already placed in the cart, you must set the Update Scope for the new promotion to Update Item and Child Items.

What’s Next?

With so many options available, Ada can easily change the behavior of her promotions. In the next unit, you explore child product cardinality and attribute overrides within a promotion.
