Hello Friends! We are a nonprofit starting to set up our Experience Cloud site and have gotten some initial questions around messaging between users in Salesforce and users on the site. The main concern is that we want our Salesforce Users and Site Users to be able to have private messages between each other that are accessible in Salesforce.
I see that the direct messages on the site give a notification inside Salesforce when they arrive, but to answer, you still need to go to the Experience Cloud. Is there any functionality to answer these without leaving Salesforce itself?

I don't believe there is. Direct messages are scoped to the experience cloud site and I don't think they're even available in the internal org at all. So internal users would have to switch over to the experience cloud site to view and respond.
You may be able to do something custom by working off the direct messages object and building custom functionality of some sort for internal users.
