Anybody have a workaround for inline editing of stage and amount on a list view?

Does anyone have an explanation of why this limitation exists?  Really diminishes the overall effectiveness of inline editing in list views. Has anyone developed a work around (using a custom field that will display the value in the originsl fields and then update the un-editable fields).
